This past January I had the pleasure of having a new model come in for headshots, and it got me thinking about the process it takes for these young up-and-coming individuals and what I can do to help and assist from a photographer's perspective. So, you want to be a model? That’s amazing! Modeling is a super exciting world full of photoshoots, fashion, and creative expression. But before you dive in, there’s a lot to learn, and the journey is just as important as the destination.
If you’re a teen dreaming of stepping into the modeling scene, know that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes dedication, patience, and the right people cheering you on. Here’s what you should keep in mind as you chase your dream!
Surround Yourself with the Right People
One of the biggest keys to success in modeling is having a strong, positive support system. Whether it’s family, friends, or mentors, you need people who believe in you, lift you up, and guide you in the right direction.
The modeling world can be competitive, and it helps to have experienced professionals—like coaches, photographers, or agents—who genuinely have your best interests at heart.
Building Your Portfolio: Your Modeling Resume
Your portfolio is basically your resume in the modeling world—it’s what agencies and clients look at to see if you’re the right fit. Here’s how to build a strong one:
Invest in professional photos – Work with a reputable photographer to get high-quality images. This is one of the best investments you can make in your career.
Show different looks – Include headshots, full-body shots, and a mix of casual, high fashion, and commercial styles.
Collaborate with creatives – Work with aspiring photographers, makeup artists, and stylists to create diverse, unique looks for your portfolio.
Keep it fresh – Update your portfolio regularly as you gain experience and grow into your style.
Learning to Pose and Express Yourself
Modeling is more than just looking good in front of a camera—it’s about confidence, movement, and expression. Watch runway shows, study magazine editorials, and practice in front of a mirror. It might feel awkward at first, but the more you practice, the more natural it becomes. If you’re feeling unsure, taking modeling classes or working with experienced photographers can be a game-changer!
Working with Clients: Professionalism Matters
Once you start booking shoots, you’ll be working with brands, photographers, and agencies. A great attitude goes a long way! Here are a few golden rules:
Be on time and come prepared – Bring the right outfits, shoes, and makeup if needed.
Take direction well – Be flexible and open to feedback.
Stay positive and professional – A great attitude makes you someone people want to work with again.
Stay True to Yourself
The most important thing in your modeling journey? Staying true to who you are. Set boundaries, prioritize your well-being, and remember that your confidence and personality matter just as much as your look.
Be patient with yourself, enjoy the process, and embrace the ups and downs. With passion, persistence, and the right mindset, you can turn your modeling dreams into reality. Now go out there and shine! I look forward to working with Neve again and seeing her success in the industry.
